Stages of Pregnancy: First Trimester

Stages of Pregnancy: First Trimester

The first trimester of pregnancy is a critical period of development and adjustment, both for the expecting mother and the developing embryo. It spans from conception to the end of week 13. This stage involves significant physical, hormonal, and emotional changes. Here’s a detailed look at the first trimester:

Weeks 1-4: Conception and Implantation

Week 1-2:

  • Ovulation and Fertilization: Pregnancy begins with the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation) and its fertilization by a sperm cell. This usually occurs about two weeks after the start of the last menstrual period (LMP).
  • Zygote Formation: The fertilized egg, now called a zygote, begins to divide and travel down the fallopian tube toward the uterus.

Week 3-4:

  • Implantation: The zygote, now a blastocyst, implants itself into the uterine lining. This can cause light spotting, known as implantation bleeding.
  • Hormonal Changes: The body starts producing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone detected by pregnancy tests. Progesterone and estrogen levels also rise to maintain the uterine lining.

Weeks 5-8: Embryonic Development

Week 5:

  • Formation of Major Systems: The embryo’s heart begins to form and may start beating. The neural tube, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, also starts developing.
  • Morning Sickness: Many women begin to experience nausea, commonly known as morning sickness, due to rising hormone levels.

Week 6:

  • Limb Buds Appear: Small buds that will become the baby’s arms and legs start to form.
  • Organ Development: The eyes, ears, and nose start to take shape. The brain continues to grow rapidly.

Week 7:

  • Heartbeat Detection: A heartbeat can often be detected via ultrasound. The embryo is now about the size of a blueberry.
  • Growth of Major Organs: The lungs, intestines, and kidneys are developing. The limbs continue to grow and differentiate.

Week 8:

  • Formation of Fingers and Toes: The arms and legs lengthen, and the fingers and toes begin to form.
  • Facial Features: The face starts to look more human as the ears, upper lip, and tip of the nose become more distinct.

Weeks 9-13: Transition to Fetal Stage

Week 9:

  • Fetal Movement: Although not yet felt by the mother, the fetus starts making small movements.
